The 2026 Melbourne Cup field
The field of 24 is confirmed on the Saturday before the race. Horses are named when the final field is set on Saturday 31 October. Until then, sweeps draw saddlecloth numbers 1 to 24, and each ticket shows its horse as soon as the field is in.

No. Not you, not your workmates. Start a sweep, add the names and draw.
Is the draw fair?
Every horse in the field is dealt, so somebody always holds the winner. Everyone gets the same number of horses, or one extra when the field doesn't divide evenly, and who gets the extras is random. The draw happens live, so everyone sees it land at the same time.
Can we draw before the field is final?
Yes. The draw deals saddlecloth numbers. When the field is set, each number shows its horse and barrier on every ticket. The tickets don't change.
What if my horse is scratched?
If an emergency gets a start, it takes over that ticket, and the board shows it. If no emergency runs, the ticket shows as scratched. Most offices refund that buy-in; it's the host's call.
Who holds the money?
You do. SureShot never touches it. Set a buy-in and the page shows the pot, what each place pays and how people should pay you.
